Sussex St. Patrick’s Parade events planned

St. Patrick’s Day is less than two months away and the Sussex County Parade Committee is kicking into gear with events planned throughout the coming weeks leading up to the 14th annual parade March 18th.

First up will be the Grand Marshals’ Luncheon honoring this year’s parade leader, Paul Crowley on Sunday, Feb. 19 at The Irish Cottage Inn, 602 Route 23N, Franklin, NJ.

The event begins at 2 p.m. and will include entertainment and recognition of the grand marshal.

Tickets for the dinner cost $60 and all proceeds from tickets and a Tricky Tray at the luncheon will benefit the Grand Marshal’s chosen charity in honor of his grandson.

A mass and traditional Irish breakfast will be held Saturday, March 4, at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Hardyston. The mass honoring St. Patrick will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the breakfast following at 10 a.m. at the Irish Cottage Inn in Franklin.

The breakfast includes bangers and rashers – Irish sausage and bacon – eggs, potatoes, beans, black pudding, white pudding, tomato, and brown bread.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and reservations are recommended.

The meals and mass all lead up to the main event, the 14th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Newton on March 18, where Paul Crowley and his family and guests will lead more than 900 marchers through the town streets in front of thousands of spectators.

The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. on Spring Street near the Stuart Street intersection. The line of march will proceed up the street, turning right onto Moran Street and walking to Memory Park. These streets will close beginning at 11 a.m.

The parade will feature nearly 100 units including elected officials, bands, floats, Irish step dancers, boy and girl scouts, local schools, police, fire, EMS, military, accompanying service and antique vehicles, and more.

If your group or organization is interested in joining our parade lineup please complete the parade application and return it to the Sussex Co. St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee no later than March 8th.

Mark Hontz will return as parade master of ceremonies. There will also be Irish theme characters and animals, and sweets and other free treats for children.
